Personalized Learning: What’s in it for Me?

If companies want to put employees in a position to succeed, they must help people learn more and do it at a faster pace. In the face of unprecedented change and volatility, organizations need to reskill and upskill their workforce quickly to meet new demands. However, most remain challenged by just how to accomplish that.

Previous Brandon Hall Group Research finds that only about 36% of companies believe they are prepared to develop the skills they will need in the future. Business is moving too fast, and the workforce is too busy, distracted, and geographically disparate for traditional training models to be completely effective.

It’s time organizations listen to their employees when they ask the age-old question, “what’s in it for me?” Far from a selfish request, focusing on the answer to this question will help L&D teams create relevant, engaging, and impactful programs. To accomplish this, organizations need to look at learning through a lens of personalization.

By building personalization into the DNA of the learning experience, many of the challenges companies face when it comes to upskilling and reskilling the workforce can be addressed. Brandon Hall Group’s Upskilling and Reskilling Study found that personalization of learning was either highly important or critical in driving the following outcomes, as well as many others:

  • Improved individual performance
  • Improved organizational performance
  • Improved employee engagement
  • Improved attractiveness and elevated learner engagement
  • Promotion of a learning-focused organizational culture

A more personalized learning approach can solve the biggest challenge facing L&D teams and learners: time. Lack of time is consistently cited as the top challenge to learning outcomes. For L&D teams, personalization means streamlining, automating, and optimizing programs for a more targeted approach.

This is by far more efficient than a one-size-fits-all approach. For learners, it means they are getting just what they need when needed, without having to wade through redundant or irrelevant content. It also makes it easier for them to discover learning opportunities they may have otherwise missed.
