In the ever-changing world of business, it’s essential for organizations to stay competitive. Keeping the workforce at the fore of competitive advantage by upskilling (teaching new skills to existing employees), reskilling (retraining existing staff for new roles) and cross-skilling (training current team members on other team members jobs to ensure continuity and flexibility) is a powerful strategy.

By developing new skills in their employees, companies can remain ahead of the curve and take advantage of industry trends. But how can this be done? With the help of a partner like AllenComm’s consulting and training services, organizations can ensure their workforce is ready for whatever comes next. From understanding the importance and benefits of upskilling, reskilling and cross-skilling, to learning who should use AllenComm’s services, this article will provide insight into how businesses can stay ahead of the game.

The Importance of Upskilling, Reskilling and Cross-Skilling Your Workforce

Upskilling, reskilling and cross-skilling your workforce is no longer a luxury in today’s competitive global economy — it’s a necessity. Organizations must invest in employee training and development to stay relevant. The need for upskilling and reskilling employees is growing exponentially as new job roles and job categories arise year over year. According to Brandon Hall Group™ research, Hiring for New Skills and New Roles, 90% of organizations are hiring or preparing to hire new staff this year into roles that have never existed before, while 63% of organizations don’t feel their current approach to learning is positioning them well to develop the skills their workforce needs for the future.

Upskilling, reskilling and cross-skilling training prepares employees for future career growth by helping them acquire new skills that will be necessary for success in their jobs. Investing in employee training can give companies an edge as their employees become more knowledgeable, efficient, and motivated.

Companies also benefit from being able to respond quickly to changes in technology, customer needs or market demands without having to go through long recruitment processes. Additionally, providing upskilling, reskilling and cross-skilling training can improve morale and engagement as employees feel empowered to take on new roles and/or responsibilities.

This approach to training can also help employees stay current with the latest industry trends and technologies, giving them an edge when pursuing opportunities for advancement. Companies can ensure that their employees develop the required skillsets for the future of work and, in turn, gain a competitive advantage in the labor market. Ultimately, upskilling, reskilling and cross-skilling training can help employers attract and retain the best talent, while also helping employees develop their skills and increase their job satisfaction.

AllenComm provides comprehensive services specifically designed for upskilling teams that are looking for an edge in today’s ever-changing workplace landscape. By utilizing AllenComm services, companies will be able to successfully transition into modern operations while ensuring that their employees are prepared with the skills they need now and into the future.

Additionally, feedback is valued more highly when an environment exists where learning is actively encouraged.

For decades, instructor-led classroom training has been the most commonly used method to deliver learning in the corporate environment. In 2019, just before the pandemic, 95% of companies in Brandon Hall Group’s Learning & Development Benchmarking Study leveraged ILT to some degree. Even as companies have been exploring more informal and experiential learning, the majority of instruction still took place in the classroom. Then the pandemic took the classroom out of the equation almost overnight, forcing organizations to devise alternatives for a remote workforce.

Without a doubt, there will be more remote workers than there were before the pandemic, despite the gradual shift back to the workplace. This presents L&D teams with a hybrid learning audience that has unique synchronicity, communication, and collaboration challenges. Some employees will be remote, some will be on-site, and some will be both. Remote workers may not keep the same hours as on-site workers, either.

In the course of our research, we not only run surveys, but also explore case studies and interview organizations of all sizes and industries. One clear takeaway from the pandemic is that those organizations that were already leveraging a wider variety of learning experiences — beyond just classes and courses — were in a far better position to adapt to post-pandemic life.

This means a greater embrace of informal and experiential learning opportunities, where learning becomes more closely integrated with how — and where — people are doing their jobs. The switch to remote work introduced a wave of digital and virtual tools for all aspects of employee life. Learning has to balance the utilization of various instructional modalities without overwhelming employees.

As an extension of our research into developing and delivering learning for a hybrid workforce, Brandon Hall Group is partnering with one of our Smartchoice Preferred Providers, Meridian Knowledge Solutions, to host a webinar that looks at strategies and tools for meeting the needs of learners in this new environment. Join us to gain insights and tactics for moving forward.

Countless studies highlight the bottom-line benefits of gender-diverse leadership. Organizations that fail to develop more senior women and other diverse leaders lack progress in ensuring leadership that reflects its employee and customer base, which will become increasingly diverse in the years ahead.

Boca Raton, FL — August 16, 2021

Brandon Hall Group, the leading independent HCM research and analyst firm, recently launched its annual research study to examine how high-performing organizations adjust their development strategies for women across demographic groups and geographies.

“More women are needed to play integral roles in organizations. The business benefits of having women in positions of influence and leadership are well-documented,” Brandon Hall Group Chief Operating Officer Rachel Cooke said. “ But this goal must go beyond merely increasing the percentage of women leaders.”

Having dedicated leadership and programs for diversity and inclusion is not the only yardstick for a diverse and inclusive environment and culture, but it’s a strong indicator of the level of commitment, according to previous Brandon Hall Group research. Another strong indicator is the confidence employees have in their ability to move into roles in the organization that align with their career aspirations.

“One strategy isn’t enough. To develop each diverse segment — racial and ethnic minorities, generations, genders, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ — individual needs, abilities, strengths and challenges must be understood and addressed,” added Cooke.

Brandon Hall Group will use the results of the study to create reports, models and tools to help organizations improve their approach to developing women.

“We will reveal leading practices for helping women of all backgrounds advance their careers,” Brandon Hall Group Senior Vice President and Principal Analyst Claude Werder said. “We also will learn how the disruption of the pandemic impacted women and organizations’ plans as they transition to the evolving ‘new normal.’”

In the world of corporate training, there are universal truths that apply to all organizations regardless of size or industry. In fact, the only thing that differentiated large and small organizations’ approaches was the per-learner cost of their technology. Other than that, everything was pretty much one-size-fits-all. But now, in the age of personalization, contextualization and remote workers, larger organizations facing a host of issues presented by the scale of their operations.

If I wanted to deliver a hyper-personalized learning program to a group of 20 people, all working on the same floor of the same building, it should be easy. But if I’m looking at 20,000 people spread out across the globe, it becomes an entirely different matter. That’s why organizations should also consider scale when thinking about modernizing and personalizing their learning programs.

Once we get north of 5,000 employees, things start to get a bit more challenging. Right off the bat, 60% of these larger enterprise organizations say that lack of the right technology is a massive challenge to delivering personalized learning. Among the many other challenges these companies face is the need for learning to be in multiple languages and dialects, cited by 59% as challenging or extremely challenging.

The technology piece would be easier for many of these large companies, with 53% saying it was either important or critical that they have a single instance of learning technologies across the entire organization. This makes it much easier to integrate the overall technology stack —which can be more complex the larger and more decentralized an organization becomes.

Here are the top five things large enterprise organizations seek in learning technology, according to Brandon Hall Group’s most recent Learning Technology Study:

  1. Ability to integrate with other systems
  2. Ease of use
  3. Reporting and analytics
  4. Mobile capabilities
  5. Personalization/Contextualization
